PROJECT INFORMATION
Southern Cross Care engaged JetBlack Plumbers to undertake a critical water main replacement at their Merrylands facility. The project was successfully completed within the specified timeline, ensuring minimal disruption to the residents and staff.

SCOPE OF WORKS
On-Site Risk Assessment and Exclusion Zone Creation:
- Conducted a comprehensive on-site risk assessment.
- Established a secure exclusion zone using temporary fencing to ensure safety.
Concrete Cutting and Trenching:
- Cut a 600mm trench through the roadway to access the water main.
- Excavated a 50m trench through the roadway and landscaped area to reach the existing water main using a machine.
Service Shutdown and Main Replacement:
- Temporarily shut down the water service.
- Cut and removed the existing 100mm cast iron water main.
- Supplied and installed 50m of 125mm PN16 HDPE pipework as a replacement.
Connection and Backfill:
- Utilised existing Waga Couplings from previous repairs to connect the new HDPE main to the existing cast iron main on each side.
- Backfilled the trench with Sydney sand and laid identification tape with tracing wire.
- Further backfilled with existing spoil and compacted in layers using road base.
Reinstatement and Site Clean-up:
- Reinstated the concrete section and roadway.
- Restored the landscaped area and ensured the site was left clean and orderly.





OUTCOME
The project was completed on time and within budget, significantly improving the reliability and performance of the water supply system for Southern Cross Care at their Merrylands facility. The meticulous planning and execution ensured that the water main replacement was conducted with minimal impact on the facility's operations, providing a seamless transition to the upgraded infrastructure.
